Kala caste of Uttarakhand
KALA is an Indian Garhwali clan, with the same surname, found in Uttarakhand in northern India.
The original first village of the Kala's is 'Sumari' situated near Srinagar Garhwal, the ancient capital of Garhwal. The Kuldevi (Clan deity) of Kala is 'Gaurja'/'Gaura'. The main temple of the Goddess is situated in Devalgarh. many ancient temple)is located in Sumari .Kala's are Garhwali Brahmins of Bharadwaj gotra and are classified as Gangadi Brahmins in Uttarakhand.Kala's are mostly spread in the valleys of Pauri and Tehri,Rudraprayag,Dehradun District
According to history of Garhwal by Shri Harikrishan Raturi, Kala's come to Garhwal from kali kumaon in 912 a.d. but as public-hearing (Janshruti), About centuries ago, a priest from Ratna Deep area of Gujarat set off for a holy journey with his king, when they were going to badrinath (old route of badrinath goes through the area where now present Sumari exists) and after reaching near to the pond in that route, being mesmerized watching to the beauty of surrounding landscape,he go to gadpati of deval garh and ask for that land by the aura and knowledge of that brahman king agrees to give the top most land of his territory to him. he got constructed a house near to the pond and settled forever. He used to worship the goddess Gaura Devi,which copper made statue he had brought with him from his native place and placed in their where modern minor temple of devi is situated .some survey also indicated relationship of kala cast with kuninda king. Dr Satish Chandra Kala found coins of Kuninda era from Sumari (Village of Kala caste) near Srinagar, Garhwal. Dr Shiv Prasad Dabral found Kulinda coins from Bhaidgaon (Langur, Pauri Garhwal) . It is not coincident that both the villages are dominated by Kala . Is there any relationship of Kala caste with Kuninda kingdom? Were Kalas Kulpurohits of Kuninda Kings? Many coins of Bhaidgaon do not have any king name on the coins. Till at historians could not guess the name of this Kuninda King.Presently there is a National institute of technology is under construction in Sumari.
